History[]

The light novel series was first announced on September 5th, 2011 through a Twitter post by Chiemi Chiba, stating that a new Ojamajo Doremi light novel titled 'Ojamajo Doremi 16', featuring the main characters at high school age was to be published by Kodansha in December.[1] She also confirmed in a subsequent post that she had read a draft copy of the manuscript.[2] On the same day, Kodansha's official website stated the exact release date to be December 2nd, in addition to confirming series composer and screenwriter Midori Kuriyama as author and character designer Yoshihiko Umakoshi as illustrator.[3]

Following the release of the first three instalments, Chiemi Chiba announced in a Twitter post on March 21st, 2013 that the next instalment would be titled 'Ojamajo Doremi 17' and would be bundled with an original drama CD, scheduled to be release in early summer 2013. In the same post, she also wrote that recording for the drama CD would take place the following week.[4][5] The first drama CD was released on July 2nd, 2013, bundled with the limited edition of Ojamajo Doremi 17, featuring voice actresses Chiemi Chiba, Tomoko Akiya, Yuki Matsuoka, Rumi Shishido and Nami Miyahara reprise their original roles as Doremi Harukaze, Hazuki Fujiwara, Aiko Senoo, Onpu Segawa and Momoko Asuka respectively. A second drama CD was later bundled with the limited edition of the 6th instalment Ojamajo Doremi 17 3rd ~Come On!~, featuring an original screenplay by screenwriter Yumi Kageyama.

The possibility of an Ojamajo Doremi 16 anime adaptation was officially addressed in an interview with Toei producer Hiromi Seki featured in the 8th instalment Ojamajo Doremi 18 2nd: Spring has.... Seki expressed that she had wanted to produce an anime adaptation for a while, but stated that the main condition preventing an adaptation is sales, citing that although the first volume sold well, the sales of the second and third volumes fell substantially in comparison. She mentioned that "If there aren't sales, then the higher-ups and sponsors who put money into the show won't gather", further elaborating that the sales would need to "get into the numbers" in order for them to collectively agree to producing an anime adaptation. Seki concluded that an anime adaptation would ultimately depend on support from fans.[6]

Trivia[]

  • The art-style closely resembles Yoshihiko Umakoshi's more-recent works, such as Casshern Sins and Heartcatch Precure.

  • The ojamajo's high school uniforms pay resemblance to various uniforms they were shown wearing in official art. Some changes include:
    • Doremi gained a plaid skirt while her knee-length socks are blue. She wears brown shoes.
    • Hazuki's uniform is lighter in color, while the bow became thin and her skirt was altered.
    • Aiko's uniform top was white instead of blue.
    • Onpu's attire was given an entire redesign. Consisting of a chiffon top with green skirt and lining, white knee socks and a purple bow at the chest.
  • The Sharp Uniforms were the only apprentice uniforms not to return in the novel series.
  • It was officially said that the novels were made for the audience who grew up with the series and were now older.
  • On July 5th, 2019, Kodansha announced that volumes 4 through 9 would be reprinted to commemorate the franchise's 20th anniversary.
